gET TO KNOW Arturo Sandoval

One of the Greatest Living Jazz Musicians

Arturo Sandoval is a jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer from Cuba. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest living jazz musicians and has won numerous awards throughout his career, including ten Grammy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

His Early Life in Cuba

Arturowas born in Artemisa, Cuba in 1 949 and began playing the trumpet at the age of 12. He studied music at the Havana Conservatory and later joined the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, where he played for several years. In the 1970s, he became a member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, a group that fused jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and gained widespread popularity in Cuba.

Protege of Dizzy Gillespie

In 1990, with the assistance of his mentor and close friend, jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo defected to the United States, where he settled in Miami, Florida. He quickly established himself as a leading figure in the jazz world and began collaborating with a number of prominent musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie. In the 1980s and 1990s, Sandoval released a series of successful albums and toured internationally, earning critical acclaim and a devoted following.

Strong Advocate for Young Musicians

In addition to his work as a musician, Sandoval is also known for his efforts to promote music education and cultural exchange. He has established music schools in Cuba and the United States, and has worked to bring young musicians from around the world together to share their talents and learn from one another.

Presidential Medal of Freedom

Throughout his career, Sandoval has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the world of jazz. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Also in 2013 he was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. Today, Sandoval continues to perform and record music, and his work remains an important influence on jazz musicians around the globe.

Arturo's Life Story on HBO

Arturo's life was the subject of the film For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story starring Andy Garcia. Arturo and Andy have maintained a friendship ever since and Andy also played bongos on Arturo's Rhythm & Soul album.
